Developed by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, a Hazardous Material Management Plan (HMMP) identifies and details the risk posed by hazardous materials present on a particular site or asset and sets out the procedures and persons responsible for controlling those risks.
Hazardous materials are defined as any item, substance, or chemical which has the potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the environment, either by itself or through interaction with other factors.
The plan should be reviewed every twelve months (minimum) to ensure that changes in the organisation are considered and accounted for i.e. change in management structure, personnel and responsibilities.
Your risk assessment should assess both shipboard hazardous substances and hazardous substances on board your vessel or offshore platform including:
Our consultants support you in reviewing and developing your management plans for your marine assets following updates in your management systems and ahead of system audits, ensuring that they meet appropriate standards.
We additionally provide advice and support services for implementing any actions in-line with the requirements of the plan i.e. scheduling plan reviews based on risk level, updating emergency procedures, and delivering any additional training for personnel, to ensure ongoing compliance with appropriate standards.
If you are a company or responsible persons, it is a legal requirement under the International Maritime Organisation that a comprehensive risk assessment is conducted aboard all vessels in accordance with the ISM code of practice. Utilising your risk assessment and the information provided from your Inventory of Hazardous Materials survey, conducting a comprehensive Hazardous Materials Management Plan, the risks to individuals and the environment can be identified and managed to ensure minimal risk.
